Chatsworth Slips Again and Falls, 1-0

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Coach Scott Holloway has been teaching physical science for three years at El Camino Real High.

He learned something new Thursday.

Chatsworth is no longer top dog in the City Section.

Holloway’s Conquistadores took over that role by defeating the Chancellors, 1-0, in a West Valley League game, marking the first time El Camino Real has beaten Chatsworth.

“We are the new top team in the City that other teams now need to worry about,” said midfielder Samantha Spencer of El Camino Real, who assisted on the goal. “I think we have proven we can beat anyone and we are going to do it this year.

“We watched and listened. Chatsworth has broken down this year. This was our chance.”

Kori McLaughlin scored in the 74th minute when her shot from 20 yards sailed over a cluster of defenders and just out of the reach of goalkeeper Sydney Sterk.

“[The ball] came off Sammy’s foot and it bounced for what seemed like eternity,” McLaughlin said. “I knew I hit it with my laces and I was like, ‘Please go in.’ ”

“We work every year to beat Chatsworth. I play because I want a ring on my finger. We knew that once we beat Chatsworth we have a good chance to win City. No one expected us to win.”

El Camino Real (11-1-1, 4-0 in league play) took a two-game lead.

After going undefeated for 12 years in league play, Chatsworth (6-4-1, 2-2) has dropped two of three and is tied with Granada Hills for second place.

“This locks it up for us as long as we don’t do anything stupid,” Holloway said. “[The girls] have wanted this for a long time. Our seniors wanted it. To beat Chatsworth has been their goal. They’ve wanted it and they came out and got it.”

Both teams struggled to create offensive opportunities. The teams combined for five shots on goal, with El Camino Real holding an 8-7 shot advantage.

“We knew our offense was stronger than their defense and we thought defensively we could stop their offense,” Holloway said.

The Chancellors had two opportunities to tie the score late in the second half.

Jenna Fodor’s shot in the 63rd minute was saved by goalkeeper Miko Penn and Moe Redlin’s shot in the 76th minute hit the side netting.

“Chatsworth is not invincible,” said Chatsworth Coach Robert Hayes.

“We have to play El Camino Real again and we are much looking forward to that.”
