Harrington Rejects Another Offer

Share

Last week’s detente has been nudged aside in favor of business as negotiations continue between Matt Harrington, former Palmdale High pitcher, and the Colorado Rockies.

The Rockies’ most recent proposal, which came via fax Wednesday, has been rejected by Harrington, though the Rockies are open to a counter-proposal.

The stalemate appeared to be dissolving last week when Harrington and his parents traveled to Denver for a face-to-face meeting with Rockies’ officials for the first time since Harrington was selected with the No. 7 pick in the amateur baseball draft in June.

The Rockies’ original offer of a $4 million signing bonus is now believed to be spread over a larger number of years, making the newest contract offer smaller in annual value, said a source close to the negotiations.

Harrington, a right-hander who throws 97 mph, could reenter the draft in June if the Rockies do not sign him by May 24.

He is the only first-round choice still unsigned.
