Harvard-Westlake Pushes Loyola Under in Overtime

Craig Weinstein’s layup with five seconds left in overtime gave Harvard-Westlake High a 60-59 victory over first-place Loyola in a Mission League game Saturday night at Harvard-Westlake.

Weinstein, a junior guard, scored seven of his 13 points in overtime. He also had 11 rebounds and 10 assists for the Wolverines (9-12, 3-5), who overcame a 20-7 first-quarter deficit.

Bryan Coffey had 10 points and nine rebounds for Harvard-Westlake.

Omar Wilkes had 20 points for Loyola (15-4, 7-2).

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Cal State Northridge 4-4, Washington State 3-11--Adam Nikolic went five for six with two runs batted in as the Matadors split a nonconference doubleheader at Northridge.

Bill Murphy (1-0) struck out nine batters and allowed two hits and three walks in seven innings. Mike Frick struck out three of the five batters he faced to earn his first save.

Jason Gorman scored the winning run on Tim Arroyo’s grounder to first base in the fifth inning.

Northridge led, 1-0, when Nikolic walked to open the fifth. J.T. Stotts, Gorman, Robert Smith and Aaron McKenzie followed with singles to increase Northridge’s lead to 3-0 before Arroyo’s grounder.

Stefan Bailie hit a two-run homer for Washington State in the second game and the Cougars (1-2) chased Craig Mosher (0-1), who allowed four runs in 2 1/3 innings.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Oxnard 74, Hancock 71--Matt Dickenson hit two free throws with six seconds left and the Condors won a Western State Conference Northern Division game when Ralph Holmes missed a three-pointer as time ran out at Hancock.

William Brown scored 21 points for Oxnard (14-12, 1-4), including four three-pointers, and Chris Massie and Dickenson each had 18 points.

Moorpark 82, Cuesta 43--Devin Montgomery scored 26 points and Lester Strong had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Raiders (17-5, 4-1) in a WSC Northern Division game at Cuesta.

Glendale 77, Canyons 52--Michael Schnyder had 32 points and 10 rebounds for the Vaqueros (16-9, 4-3) in a WSC Southern Division victory at Canyons (9-16, 4-3).

Life University 88, The Master’s 80--Todd Whittington scored 26 points, but the Mustangs (14-9) were outscored, 8-2, in the final two minutes of a nonconference game in Marietta, Ga.

Tyler Hoffman scored 19 points and Kenny Jackson added 18 for The Master’s, which lost to the Running Eagles (14-8) for the fourth time in two seasons.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Pepperdine 58, St. Mary’s 46--Damaris Hinojosa scored 17 points and Rasheeda Clark had 14 as the Waves won a West Coast Conference game at Pepperdine.

Pepperdine (14-7, 4-2) trailed, 26-25, at halftime before opening the second half with a 17-3 run.

Antelope Valley 61, Chaffey 54--Ebony Sullivan and Kristil Jones each scored 14 points for the Marauders (13-11, 4-3), who held Chaffey to three points in the last four minutes of a Foothill Conference game at Chaffey.

Valley 65, West L.A. 50--Michelle Tompkins had 19 points and Tynisha Howze had 18 points and 15 rebounds as the Monarchs overcame a 32-25 deficit in a WSC Southern Division game at West L.A.

Lily Ramirez had 11 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots for the Monarchs (19-10, 4-3).

Canyons 97, Glendale 54--Vonetta Lanier scored 20 points on nine-for-11 shooting to lead the Cougars (20-6, 7-0) to their 19th consecutive WSC victory in a Southern Division game at Canyons.

Canyons is the highest scoring women’s team in the state, averaging 83.5 points.

WRESTLING

Morro Bay tournament--Dan Kunkes of Simi Valley High advanced to the final of the heavyweight division before losing at the California Invitational.

Kunkes pinned all four of his opponents en route to the final before losing, 3-1, to Matt Tesoro of Righetti in the last six seconds.
