Valley Christian Wins in Baseball

Brad Boekestein pitched a six-hitter and Chase Twedell hit two triples as Cerritos Valley Christian beat Whittier Christian, 6-1, in the Southern Section Division V baseball title game Thursday at Blair Field in Long Beach.

It was the second section baseball championship for the Crusaders (17-14-1), who scored twice in the first and broke the game open with four runs in the fourth. Twedell had a two-run triple and Matt Anema a two-run double in the inning, both with two outs.

Boekestein (9-3) held the Heralds (17-13) at bay most of the game, striking out five in his third complete game of the year.

The victory completed an impressive turnaround for Valley Christian, which started the season 2-8 and finished it by winning 10 of 11.

Anthony Villa (6-9) went the distance and Robert Alexander had two hits for Whittier Christian.

In the Division VI final:

Avalon 7, Boron 6--Roberto Martin (4-3) struck out 10 in five innings of relief and also drove in the winning run for Avalon at Blair Field.

Martin, who had three hits and two runs, hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning that scored Joe Hernandez to break a 6-6 tie.

The victory was the 11th in a row for the Lancers (16-7), who won the first section baseball title in school history.

Ben Swann had two hits for Boron (15-13).
