Keilon Fortune was off the mark. So was Kilpatrick.

They’ll both get another chance, though.

The Mustangs failed to win the Southern Section Division V-AA title, losing to Downey Calvary Chapel, 66-53, but still qualified for the state Division V tournament.

Fortune made only six of 31 shots for Kilpatrick (26-2), which plays a first-round game tonight at San Diego Santa Fe Christian. The Mustangs are making their first appearance in the state tournament.

“He’s doing OK,” Coach Alvin Brown said of Fortune, who finished with 19 points on Saturday, about half his usual output. “He’s still confident. He’s been confident all season long. It was just one of those games.”

Santa Fe Christian (25-3), which lost to Buckley, 64-59, at the Valley Christian tournament in December, has won 10 consecutive games and defeated Marion Catholic for its first San Diego Section championship.

Three players scored in double figures for Santa Fe Christian, an aggressive team that outrebounded Marion Catholic, 44-29.

The winner plays defending state champion Price (29-3), which defeated larger-division playoff schools Ontario, Verbum Dei and J.W. North during the regular season.

“If it happens we play Price, then we’ll play Price,” Brown said. “We’ll leave it all out on the floor.”
