City Girls Face Wave-Bound Pair

Two Pepperdine-bound high players, Jennifer Lacy of Agoura High and Crystal McCutcheon of Antelope Valley, will lead the Southern Section against the City in the Battle of the Valley all-star girls’ basketball game next Saturday at Cal State Northridge.

The girls’ game will begin at 5 p.m., with the boys’ game at 7 p.m.

The Southern Section girls’ team, coached by Eric Olsson of Saugus, features three players from Harvard-Westlake--Karina Siam, Nyasha Braylock and Chantal Kazay.

Also on the team are Brusta Brown of Saugus, Danica Cunningham of Burroughs, Bridget Harris of Newbury Park, Sierra Hauser-Price of Notre Dame, Karri Keeble of Village Christian, Jackie Kolesar of Paraclete, Marissa Meadows of Valencia, Megan Wiser of Louisville, Novey Woodard-Parker of Royal and Jacquana Young of Antelope Valley.

Leading the City Section, coached by Ron Harris of Monroe, is USC-bound Alexis Weatherspoon of Grant and Schquay Brignac of Taft, two speedy guards also known for their track skills.

Also on the team are Christina Aguinaga, Denisha McCoy and Oreeille Revish of Taft, Amber Burgin of Monroe, Krystal Clay of Grant, Gladys De La Torre and Ryan Rene of Van Nuys, Lyndsey Eichler of Chatsworth, Jennifer Goodman, Aubree Smithey, Victoria Wong and Karen Shun of El Camino Real and Richelle Sherman of North Hollywood.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Clinte Motley and Carol Stevenson have been named the Cal State Northridge Athletic Congress athletes of the month for April.

Motley, who won the men’s triple jump (52-2), was second in the high jump (7-1 1/2) and third in the long jump (24-9) in the California-Nevada Championships, was named Field Athlete of the Meet.

Stevenson finished third in the women’s hammer throw at the California-Nevada meet with a mark of 192-4, fourth-best all-time in the Big Sky Conference. She placed seventh in the discus (156-0).

HONORS

* All-American women’s basketball player Erin Buescher and men’s soccer goalkeeper Eric Pattison have been selected The Master’s College athletes of the year.

Buescher, who was drafted by the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx, led the Mustangs to a 23-6 record, a No. 4 national ranking and a berth in the NAIA tournament.

Pattison recorded 12 shutouts to help Master’s to an 18-5 record and the National Christian College Athletic Assn. tournament final.

* Pitchers Stephanie Blaire of Canyons and Monique Barreto of Ventura, and infielders Lacy Bregger of Canyons and Katy Gonzales of Antelope Valley were selected all-state by junior college softball coaches.

Monique Acedo of Moorpark, Erin Yasutake of Ventura and Blair Blakeley of Valley were selected to the All-Southern California team.

SOFTBALL

* Julie Astrachan, a pitcher at Calabasas High in the late 1980s, will be inducted into the UC Davis Athletic Hall of Fame on June 2.

Astrachan was a three-time conference pitcher of the year at Davis and became coach at Pierce College.

GOLF

* The Bobby Scheper Memorial tournament to raise funds for juvenile diabetes will be June 8 at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena. Cost is $100. The tournament honors Scheper, a former Granada Hills High football ball boy who died in 1994. Information: (800) 366-8600.
