GOLDEN LEAGUE FINALS

A year after a pulled quad muscle in his right leg kept Seth Amoo of Highland from reaching the state championships, he pulled off a quadruple at the league finals.

Amoo won the 100 (10.89), 200 (21.23) and ran the anchor leg in Highland’s first-place finish in the 400 relay at Quartz Hill High. On Tuesday afternoon, Amoo took first in the long jump (22-4).

His time in the 200 has Amoo believing a state championship is possible.

“I am so glad to be running at this time of the year,” said Amoo, who was injured before the league finals last year. “I feel like I can get where I need to be for state. My last five meters (in the 200) I slowed down because I can’t see anyone around me.

“I was looking forward to state last year before I blew out my leg. I just want to stay strong the rest of the way.”

Jamil Smith of Palmdale, defending state champion in the triple jump, won the 110 high hurdles (14.96) Friday and the triple jump (47-1) on Tuesday.

Despite not reaching the 49-foot mark he did in last year’s state finals, Smith is confident he can repeat as state champion.

“I feel the same now as I did last year at this time,” said Smith, who committed to Washington State earlier in the season. “I think I am peaking at the right time. I had a couple injuries earlier in the year, but I am feeling really good right now.”

Littlerock senior Jose Galena also seems to be peaking at the right time. Galena ran a career best 47.70 to win the 400 meters.

Antelope Valley’s Pheobe Hodges and Highland’s Greg Root each swept the shotput and discus.

Hodges won the girls’ discus (107-3) and the shotput (career best 36-8). Root won with throws of 50-9 in the shot and 139-1 3/4.

Lancaster senior Kierah Figueroa won the long jump (17-3 3/4) and the triple jump (37-1 1/4) on Tuesday.
