Laguna Beach Scores Upset in Volleyball

Sarah Salem had a team-high 29 kills as visiting Laguna Beach upset Corona del Mar, 11-15, 15-11, 9-15, 15-2, 15-8, in a Pacific Coast League girls’ volleyball match on Tuesday.

Salem also had eight blocks, 14 digs and five aces, and was complemented by a strong defensive performance by Brittney Wood, who had 22 kills and seven blocks for the Artists (6-4, 3-0).

Corona del Mar, No. 10 in The Times’ regional rankings, fell to 10-3 and 2-1. Laguna Beach got 50 assists from Leanne Kubisak.

In other girls’ volleyball:

Mater Dei d. Santa Margarita, 15-6, 15-8, 15-11--Top-ranked Mater Dei (21-3, 2-0) remained unbeaten in the Serra League as Ashley Bayer and Bregan Mulligan had 10 kills apiece.

Erika Mannix and Blair Socci had six kills each for Santa Margarita (11-7, 0-2).

North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake d. Flintridge Sacred Heart, 15-9, 15-8, 15-6--Courtney Schultz had 17 kills and Alexandra Dunphy had 39 assists for third-ranked Harvard-Westlake.

In girls’ tennis:

Westlake Village Westlake 12, Simi Valley 6--Westlake took a major step toward winning its third consecutive Marmonte League title, and seventh in eight years, by defeating previously undefeated Simi Valley (11-1, 4-1).

Amy Corwin, who normally plays No. 1 singles, teamed with Brittara Blaine and swept in doubles, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, 6-1, and Westlake (8-2, 6-0) scored six apiece in doubles and singles.

Westlake has won 16 league titles since 1978.

Stacy Gunawan swept three singles sets for Simi Valley, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1.

In boys’ water polo:

Brea Olinda 10, Valencia 7--Rory Nelson had three goals for Brea Olinda (11-3, 3-0), which outscored Valencia in the third quarter, 5-1, in an Orange League and Division VI showdown. Brea is No. 3 in the division; Valencia, ranked No. 10, dropped to 10-6, 2-1.
