Harvard-Westlake Gets It Right

Share

North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake was slightly off its game, and so was the scoreboard operator, who erroneously gave Simi Valley Royal two extra points midway through the third game of a nonleague girls’ volleyball match.

But the Wolverines shook off the two-point handicap and a slow start in a 15-13, 15-3, 18-16 victory Wednesday at Harvard-Westlake.

Courtney Schultz delivered 11 kills, Terbrie Taylor added nine and Harvard-Westlake (2-0) showed no signs of folding in the third game after an 8-6 lead inexplicably became an 8-8 tie on the scoreboard. The match should have been over on a kill by Schultz that would have made it 15-13, but the scoreboard showed 15-15, forcing Harvard-Westlake to win it a few points later.

“It’s kind of hard to keep track [of the score] when things begin moving real fast,” said Harvard-Westlake co-Coach Nigel Dookhoo. “I had a little faith in [the players] and they pulled it out.”

That they did. Alexandra Dunphy and Terbrie Taylor each had a block late in the game to finish the sweep.

Royal (2-5) had a tough time at last weekend’s Orange County Championships, but played better against the Wolverines.

“That [match] will serve us well all year long,” Coach Travis Ferguson said.
