From Staff and Wire Reports

Pete Sampras’ latest bid to end a two-year drought without a tournament title ended Thursday in a 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-6 (5) third-round loss to Tommy Haas at the Toronto Masters Series.

No. 3-seeded Haas of Germany fired 24 aces in ousting Sampras, the No. 13-seeded and a former world No. 1 who hasn’t won in 30 tournaments since becoming Wimbledon champion in 2000.

“It’s been a frustrating year, but I still feel like I’ve got the game,” Sampras said. “Hopefully, one week it’s going to click.

“It’s something I’ve never had to do before. I could walk away tomorrow and feel like I’ve done everything I’ve wanted, but I still feel like there’s one last moment for me, maybe a couple of moments.”

Haas also believes Sampras still has good tennis left in him.

“He’s probably not at his best, but I think he played really good tennis and I think he’s on his way back to be very dangerous,” Haas said.

Meanwhile, David Nalbandian of Argentina upset No. 4-seeded Tim Henman of Britain, 4-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5.
