Five teams from the preseason top 10, including then-No. 2 Quartz Hill, lost at least two games and tied another during the first two weeks of play. Santa Margarita is ranked No. 1 after outscoring opponents, 19-1, in its first four games. Temecula Chaparral, which won in a shootout over Santa Ana Mater Dei to win the championship of the Rancho Cucamonga tournament on Dec. 9, is the highest-ranked newcomer. Riverside Poly lost to Chaparral in a semifinal of the Rancho Cucamonga tournament, but upset host Irvine Woodbridge, 1-0, in a nonleague game last Wednesday.

Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley, which entered the season at No. 5, moves into the top spot after winning the Santa Ana Mater Dei tournament. The Cougars are No. 1 despite a loss to Los Alamitos because preseason No. 1 Santa Margarita lost to Los Alamitos and Irvine Northwood in the Trabuco Hills tournament. Los Alamitos jumps to No. 4 after reaching the tournament final. Huntington Beach Edison rises to No. 5 with a victory over preseason No. 2 San Clemente. Dana Point Dana Hills jumps into the rankings at No. 9 after shutting out Irvine Woodbridge.

The Inland Empire continued to make noise in Orange County as Upland won the Villa Park tournament Saturday with an 8-7, sudden-death victory over Los Alamitos. A week earlier, Riverside Poly defeated Upland, 11-9, in the semifinals of the Benson Cup at Placentia El Dorado High, before losing in the final, 13-6, to Long Beach Wilson. El Toro finished third in the Villa Park tournament and replaced Anaheim Canyon in the top 10 on the basis of its 6-5 victory over the Comanches in a pool-play game Friday.

Santa Ana Calvary Chapel finished a disappointing sixth at the Clovis Shootout, but considering the tournament featured six of the top 15 teams in the state and was the first action of the season for the Eagles, a little rust was to be expected. Look for Calvary Chapel to rebound at the prestigious Reno Tournament of Champions this weekend. Second-ranked Santa Ana solidified its spot as one of the top teams in the Southland with a dominant performance at the Huntington Beach Edison tournament. The Saints won the team title by 141 points over Laguna Hills. Orange El Modena moves up to No. 7 after finishing runner-up to defending state champion Bakersfield at the East Bakersfield tournament.
