Lynwood Girls Upset in Nike Tournament
The Lynwood High girls’ basketball team, ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today, was upset Friday night by Canyon (Tex.), 56-39, in the semifinals of the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix.
Canyon, ranked 14th by USA Today and No. 1 in the state, according to the Texas Assn. of Basketball Coaches poll, frustrated Lynwood with its patient offense keyed by the inside-outside combination of 6-5 post Kalee Carey and guard Brooke Baughman. Carey had a game-high 20 points and 19 rebounds for the Lady Eagles. Baughman made two three-pointers and finished the game with 17 points.
Newhall Hart transfer Brandi Kimble scored 12 points. Sade Wiley-Gatewood had 11 for Lynwood (6-1), which last week defeated the nation’s second-ranked team, Forestville (Md.) Bishop McNamara, at the Lone Star Classic in San Antonio.
Canyon advanced to today’s championship game against Christ the King of New York.
