University Wins in Overtime

L.A. University, seeded second, scored twice late in overtime Friday and avoided an upset with a 3-1 victory over visiting Van Nuys in a City Section first-round boys’ soccer playoff game.

Kohani Shahin and Daniel Domenzian scored with under 10 minutes to play in the overtime for University, which will meet Roosevelt in the second round.

Grant 2, Carson 1 (2 OT)--Antonio Lopez scored both goals for Grant (13-5-1), including the game-winner in the 94th minute, in the first-round game.

In the Southern Section:

Montebello Schurr 1, Montclair 0--Kervy Abrego scored off a crossing pass from Diego Gonzales in the 15th minute of the Division I first-round game at Montclair.

Schurr (15-5-2) will face Capistrano Valley or Santa Ana in the second round Tuesday.


Los Alamitos 4, Valencia 0--Cameron Kolovos, Nick Koromelas, Evan Perley and Dustin Venegas scored goals for the top-seeded Griffins (23-1-1) in a Division II first-round game at Los Alamitos. Goaltender Geremy Uhl made five saves and recorded his 16th shutout of the season.

Riverside Poly 2, Yucaipa 0--Steven Ochoa scored the first goal 31 seconds into the game for host Riverside Poly (23-3-1) in the Division II first-round game.

Beverly Hills 1, Pasadena 0--Eli Meschures scored in the 60th minute on a pass from Alex Safarov in the Division III first-round game. Beverly Hills (18-6-2) tied the 10-year-old school record for victories in a season (18).

Temecula Chaparral 2, Placentia Valencia 0--Cody Rizzo and Ian Etherington scored in the first minute and goalie Dash Crutchley had four saves for top-seeded Chaparral (23-1-1) in a Division III first-round game at Chaparral.


Santa Ana Mater Dei 2, West Torrance 0--Robbie Rogers and Randy Poggio scored for Mater Dei (19-2-5) in the Division III first-round game at Mater Dei.

Pomona Diamond Ranch 2, Torrance Bishop Montgomery 2 (Diamond Ranch wins on penalty kicks, 4-1)--Mario Rodriguez and Jorge Munoz scored in regulation for Diamond Ranch (18-6) in the Division IV first-round game. Marco Rodriguez, Robert Madrid, Matt Centonze and Andy Rodriguez converted Diamond Ranch’s penalty kicks. Saul Gonzales scored both goals for Bishop Montgomery.

El Monte Mountain View 2, Apple Valley 1--Hector Garcia scored both goals for Mountain View (13-3-2) in the Division IV first-round game, including the winner in the 65th minute in the Division IV first-round game at Mountain View.
