Sanders’ Showing Is First Class

Darius Sanders scored 21 of his 28 points in the first half and Gabriel Pruitt added 14 points for Compton Centennial, which never trailed in a 77-64 Ocean League victory over South Torrance Wednesday night at South Torrance High.

Centennial (12-0, 1-0 in league), ranked seventh in The Times’ regional rankings, led, 35-25, at halftime despite committing 15 turnovers. Kevin Richie scored 15 points for South Torrance (5-7, 0-1).

Newhall Hart 61, Crescenta Valley 52--Cody Kase held Jimmy Goffredo, Crescenta Valley’s leading scorer, to 15 points on two-of-13 shooting to help Hart (13-3) win a nonleague game at Crescenta Valley. Four players scored in double figures for Hart, led by Kase’s 13 points.

In girls’ basketball:

Rialto Eisenhower 59, Carson 33--Jasmine Clarendon scored 15 points and LaSheree Christian added 15 points, nine assists and nine rebounds for Eisenhower (11-0) in a quarterfinal game of the Chino Hills Ayala tournament.

Hawthorne 77, El Segundo 69--Kelly Geis scored 45 points in the Ocean League loss for El Segundo (5-8, 0-1), including a layup with three seconds left in regulation that forced overtime.

In boys’ soccer:

Sylmar 2, Westlake 2--Sylmar’s Cesar Solario scored on a penalty kick in the final minute to send the Simi Valley Royal pool play tournament game into a shootout. Sylmar (11-2-2) won the shootout, 5-4, on Jose Lazcano’s goal.

Beverly Hills 2, Lawndale Leuzinger 1--Senior forward Chuck Kim scored in the 70th minute to break a 1-1 tie and lift visiting Beverly Hills (7-3-2) in an Ocean League opener. Kim’s goal, the 46th of his career, broke the school record.
