Ground Is Broken for Tower, Fountain Project
A group of local officials, including former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, joined Hollywood residents Thursday for the groundbreaking of the Gateway to Hollywood project, which will feature a 30-foot-high glass tower and a large fountain on the median where Franklin and Wilcox avenues meet Cahuenga Boulevard.
The word “Hollywood” will run down the tower’s three sides and is intended to be a beacon’ to motorists entering the area from the Cahuenga offramp of the Hollywood Freeway, said Merle Singer, president of the Yucca Corridor Coalition. The project, which includes new benches and plantings, is expected to be completed by July.
Riordan praised the $658,000 project, saying it was another sign of Hollywood’s resurgence. Councilmen Tom LaBonge and Eric Garcetti and county Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky also praised the gateway and Singer’s leadership in pushing for it.
