Win Doesn’t Make Stoll a Fan of the Wet Look

Victory often comes at a cost. For Lake Forest El Toro High girls’ water polo Coach Don Stoll, it was his cell phone that paid the price Thursday after the Chargers defeated San Clemente, 11-10, in overtime in a key South Coast League game at San Clemente High.

Several El Toro players pushed Stoll into the pool after the victory, a traditional move but one he hardly anticipated.

“When you win a league title, then you get pushed in,” Stoll said. “This was not good.”

That said, Stoll pulled a cell phone from the pocket of his dripping shorts, shook his head and then noticed his wallet was missing.

The overzealous celebration only slightly dampened an otherwise exciting game.

San Clemente’s Courtney Thom tied the score, 9-9, with 2 minutes, 18 seconds remaining in regulation and the Tritons nearly won the game in the closing seconds when Stephanie Cadman’s lob was nudged over the crossbar by El Toro goalkeeper Erin Greenberg.

San Clemente (13-2, 2-1), ranked seventh by The Times, and El Toro (12-6, 3-0), ranked eighth, traded goals at the start of the first of two three-minute overtimes.

Laura Palacios gave the Chargers an 11-10 lead with a goal in the final seconds of the first extra period.

Christina Kuno scored five goals to lead San Clemente. Adrian Beaney scored four goals to lead El Toro.

In girls’ basketball:

Antelope Valley 46, Palmdale 39--The Antelopes won their 17th consecutive Golden League game and took an important step toward a third consecutive league title at Palmdale.

Junior guard Shaquina Mosley made three of Antelope Valley’s eight three-point baskets and scored 17 points.

Sheena Crenshaw (three three-pointers) had nine points and Lori Hodges added seven for the Antelopes.

Teiosha George had 16 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks and Jennifer Albertson added 11 points for Palmdale, 15-9 overall and 5-1 in the Golden League, which made only 17 of 55 shots.

Antelope Valley (21-1, 6-0), which made eight of 19 three-point shots, opened the fourth quarter with a 9-2 run to pull away and hand the Falcons their 14th home loss in 14 seasons.

Bishop Amat 64, St. Paul 32--Erin Myrick scored 23 points to lead Bishop Amat. Myrick helped shut down St. Paul’s Crystal Erwin, who finished with 15 points.
