Stephens to Coach Tennis at San Clemente High

John Stephens has been hired as girls’ tennis coach at San Clemente High.

Stephens, who previously coached boys’ and girls’ tennis for 11 seasons at Dana Hills High, spent the last year as a teacher at Gilbert (Ariz.) Higley High. He is a 1978 graduate of San Clemente.

In other personnel moves:

* Chuck Berrington has resigned as baseball coach at Westlake Village Westlake High to pursue coaching positions at the collegiate level.

He coached the last 6 1/2 seasons at Westlake, leading the Warriors to the last three Marmonte League titles and two Division III runner-up spots.

* Craig Williams has been promoted to coach the Ventura Buena boys’ basketball team after 11 years as an assistant, becoming only the fourth coach in the school’s 41 years.

He replaces Glen Hannah, who retired after 21 seasons and a 308-229 record.

* Tom Cox, who guided Palos Verdes Peninsula High to division finals seven times in 11 years, has resigned as the school’s boys’ tennis coach.

He will remain as a math teacher and retain his position as the Panthers’ girls’ tennis coach.

* Reggie Morris has been hired to coach boys’ basketball at Lawndale Leuzinger. Morris played for Howard and was a student assistant at Mount St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg, Md.

* Joey Pacelli, former water polo player at Villa Park, has been hired as the boys’ coach at his alma mater. Pacelli, a 1996 graduate, also played at UC Santa Barbara. He replaces Nate Julson, who resigned after one season.

* Mark Flatten, who guided Garden Grove Pacifica’s baseball team to a 21-6 record this season, has been hired as coach at Orange Lutheran. Flatten replaces former Angel Mark Langston, who resigned after two seasons.

* Matt Stine, who guided Placentia El Dorado to the Southern Section Division III baseball title in 2001, has been hired as hitting coach at Fullerton College. Stine was an assistant under Steve Gullotti at El Dorado last season.

* Greg Barnes has been promoted from offensive coordinator to head football coach at Oxnard Santa Clara. Barnes, a 1994 Santa Clara graduate, replaces Dan Anderson, who resigned after the Saints finished the season 2-7.

* Jim George has been hired as girls’ basketball coach at Los Angeles Pilgrim. George, who coached at Los Angeles Archer for the last three years, replaces Kevin Blue, who resigned.

* Al Tarazon has resigned after 10 years as baseball coach at Oxnard Channel Islands to become coach at Oxnard High.

* Tony Nieto, a former Loyola Marymount assistant, has been hired to coach baseball at Whittier California High.
