Strong Outing by Weil Keeps Pacifica on Top

Garden Grove Pacifica reaffirmed its position as the No. 1 softball team in The Times’ rankings with a 3-0 victory over No. 7 Santa Ana Mater Dei in the championship game of the Anaheim Canyon tournament Saturday at Canyon High.

Brittany Weil (18-0) pitched a two-hitter and struck out nine to earn the victory for Pacifica (23-2-1), which two weeks ago defeated Mater Dei, ranked No. 1 at the time, to move into the top spot.

Jessica Marical’s run-scoring double in the bottom of the first inning gave Pacifica a 1-0 lead. She later scored on a wild pitch. Pacifica added a run in the fourth inning when Jamie Waldecker doubled in Jennifer Orpatelli.

Sheila McKorkle had both hits for Mater Dei (21-5), which never advanced a runner past second base.

Royal 6, Thousand Oaks 0--Tournament most valuable player Kirstie Kenton (8-2) pitched a four-hitter, struck out four and did not walk a batter for No. 16 Royal (21-5-1) in the Thousand Oaks tournament Green division final.

Nichole Mears, chosen best offensive player, hit a solo home run for Royal and Heather Erickson and Andrea Ramirez each had two hits and drove in a run. Thousand Oaks, ranked No. 12, falls to 20-7-1. The teams meet again Tuesday with the Marmonte League title on the line.

El Segundo 5, Crescenta Valley 1--Richelle Villescas (17-3) pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts and one walk as El Segundo (20-3) won the championship game of its tournament. Villescas has 76 strikeouts in her last six games.
