It’s a Racket for El Camino Real

The Woodland Hills El Camino Real boys’ tennis team beat Granada Hills, 221/2-7, for its third consecutive City Section championship Friday at Balboa Sports Complex in Encino.

El Camino Real (13-0) had beaten Granada Hills (11-3) twice in West Valley League play, but both matches were decided by 4-3 margins

El Camino Real’s Nick Kogan and Phil Gegenheimer swept their sets, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, to complete an undefeated season at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 team of Isaac Adrabi and Dan Escobedo also swept its sets to finish unbeaten.

El Camino Real won 12 of 16 singles sets, with Dan Nguyen, brothers Bruce and Troy Aiken and Dustin Lang each getting stopped only by defending City singles champion Nima Roshan.

Reseda Cleveland defeated Sepulveda Monroe, 20 1/2-9, to win the City Invitational title.

In baseball:

Canyon Country Canyon 5, Valencia 4--A one-out, bases-loaded walk to Cody Leavitt in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Cowboys a victory and a share of the Foothill League championship for the first time since 1984. Canyon (20-5, 11-4) won two of three from co-champion Valencia (21-5, 11-4).

Arcadia 5, Crescenta Valley 0--Gary Kim and Alex George combined on a two-hitter to give Arcadia (22-3, 13-2) the victory and a share of the Pacific League championship with Crescenta Valley (22-3, 13-2). A four-run sixth inning featured RBI singles by Chris Gelalich, Toshi Mora, Erick Carroll and Colby Miller.

In track and field:

Southern Section preliminaries--Huntington Beach Edison senior Denny Flanagan, who was seventh in the boys’ 110 high hurdles at the state finals last year, has been battling injuries the past two weeks and was forced to withdraw from his heat during the Division I preliminaries at Long Beach Veterans Stadium.
