Cavic Breaks National High School Record
Tustin senior Michael Cavic broke the national high school record in the 50 freestyle during the Southern Section Division II preliminaries Friday at Long Beach Belmont Plaza.
Cavic set the record of 19.77 seconds on the opening leg of the 200 freestyle relay, surpassing the time of 19.91 by Anthony Robinson of Houston Memorial in 1997.
Cavic said he will try to become the first high school swimmer to break 47 seconds in the 100 butterfly in today’s finals.
He was the top qualifier in prelims, posting a time of 50.60 after swimming the first half in 23.11. The national high school record is 47.10, set by Nate Dusing in 1997.
