Malibu’s Stewart on Course for Another Title

Defending Southern Section singles champion Doug Stewart of Malibu High defeated Glendale Hoover’s Dylan Kim, 6-3, 6-3, in the individual quarterfinals Friday at SeaCliff Tennis Club in Huntington Beach.

Stewart will face San Gorgonio senior Malcolm Scatliffe in a semifinal today at SeaCliff. Scatliffe defeated last year’s runner-up, Patrick Buchanan of Anaheim Servite, 7-6 (3), 6-4.

Chris Surapol of Cerritos Whitney will face Irvine University’s Aaron Yovan in the other semifinal. Surapol outlasted Palos Verdes Peninsula’s Rylan Rizza, 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-1, and Yovan beat Calabasas freshman Gary Sacks, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-1.

The Corona del Mar doubles team of Garrett Snyder and Carsten Ball and North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake’s James Thayer and Jon Rubenstein also advanced to face each other in a semifinal. Los Alamitos’ John Mano and Jason Wood and Beverly Hills’ Garrett Leight and Jonathan Dutton will meet in the other.

The semifinals begin at 10:30 a.m. and will be followed by the finals.

In the City tournament, top-seeded Jason Nguyen of Chatsworth and No. 2-seeded Nima Roshan of Granada Hills each won semifinal matches and will face off for the title Wednesday at Balboa Sports Complex in Encino.

Nguyen defeated Palisades’ Chris Ko, 7-5, 7-5, and Roshan edged Venice left-hander Jeff Melnick, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-3.

In the doubles semifinals, brothers Norman and Bobby Tam of Belmont beat Woodland Hills El Camino Real’s Nick Kogan and Phil Gegenheimer, 6-1, 6-1, and Carson’s Nick Noa and Ron Esquerra defeated Palisades’ Alex Leb and Soheil Safii, 6-2, 6-3.
