Peninsula Wins Southern Divisional

Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula moved to a different division this year for the Southern Section girls’ golf playoffs, but the results were the same.

The Panthers shot 422 Tuesday at El Toro Golf Course in Irvine and won the Southern Divisional championship by two shots over Anaheim Esperanza.

Annika Windon shot five-over-par 77 to lead Peninsula, which won the Northern Divisional last year. Amy Davis shot 82 to lead Esperanza, which had six players between 82 and 89 and was runner-up for the second consecutive year.

South Torrance shot 431 and finished third, followed by Santa Margarita with 451 and Fullerton Rosary with 454.

In the Northern Divisional at Santa Barbara Golf Club, Goleta Dos Pueblos shot 430 to win by 17 shots over Camarillo. Sara Oviada shot eight-over-par 80 to lead Dos Pueblos. Atascadero was third with 448, followed by Saugus with 462 and Agoura with 465.

The top five teams from each divisional advance to the section finals Nov. 18 at Las Posas Country Club in Camarillo.

Billie Jo Grant of Arroyo Grande, the top-ranked girls’ discus thrower in the nation in 2002, will sign a letter of intent with Arizona today on the first day of the weeklong early-signing period.

Grant, who took recruiting trips to Arizona, Arizona State, Wisconsin and North Carolina, won the state title in June and placed fifth in the World Junior championships in Jamaica in July.
