Tangtiphaiboontana Signs With Stanford

Jenni Tangtiphaiboontana of Long Beach Wilson, one of the top girls’ golfers in the Southland, has signed with Stanford.

Tangtiphaiboontana, the top player for Wilson, No. 1 in The Times’ rankings, was the runner-up in the U.S. Girls Junior championship in August, consolation winner in the Women’s Western Junior and finished among the top three in two American Junior Golf Assn. tournaments.

Tangtiphaiboontana shot 69 to lead Wilson to a second-place finish in the 2001 Southern Section team championships.

A two-time Compaq Scholastic All-American, Tangtiphaiboontana ranks first in her class with a 4.5 grade point average. She chose Stanford over USC and Yale.

Outfielder Delmon Young of Camarillo, The Times’ player of the year last season, has committed to Arizona. Young, who is expected to be one of the top 10 selections in next spring’s amateur baseball draft, hit .542 with 17 home runs and 56 runs batted in as he led the Scorpions to the Division I title.

Meredith McColl, an All-American goalkeeper from Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley who played on the Pan-American gold medalist junior team last summer, has signed with the Stanford women’s water polo team.

Kyle Dowden of Camarillo, a Times’ second-team all-star golfer last season, has committed to California. Dowden tied for second in the Southern Section championships last year and was fourth in the California Junior Amateur championship last summer.

Alanna Silvertrust of Camarillo has committed to the Kentucky women’s golf team.

Cacie Pope, a 6-2 forward at Lakewood Artesia, where she helped the Pioneers to consecutive Southern Section Division III-AA titles, has signed with Western Kentucky.

Colby Lyman, a 6-0 outside hitter from La Canada St. Francis, has signed with the UCLA women’s volleyball team.

Shane Day, a pitcher from Whittier La Serna, has signed with St. Mary’s.

Stacy Birk, the Sunset League softball pitcher of the year from Huntington Beach Edison, has committed to Illinois State.

Allyson Felix of North Hills L.A. Baptist, the defending state track champion in the 100 and 200 meters, is expected to sign her letter of intent Monday. She is deciding between USC and South Carolina. Her brother, Wes, runs track at USC.
