Canyon Sweeps Staub Titles

Canyon Country Canyon swept the boys’ and girls’ Division I titles in the Kenny Staub Invitational cross-country meet at Crescenta Valley Park in Glendale on Saturday.

The defending state Division I champion Cowboys defeated Crescenta Valley, 35-49, in the boys’ race as Ryan Morgan placed first with a 15-minute 30-second clocking over the three-mile course. Teammate Troy Werner was third in 15:39 for a Canyon team that had six of the top 13 finishers.

The Canyon girls defeated Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula, 29-66, to snap Peninsula’s streak of Staub titles at three. Freshman Brenda Cohen of Canyon placed second in 18:50 and senior teammate Brenda Stevens was third in 19:11. Junior Lindsay Flacks of North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake won the Division I title in 18:42.

Mohamed Trafeh of Duarte and the Barstow boys turned in the top performances Saturday in the Yucaipa Invitational cross-country meet.

Trafeh, a junior, ran 15:03 over the three-mile course to win the Division I race by 26 seconds over second-place Mike Powers of Santa Margarita. It was the third consecutive invitational victory for Trafeh, who won the Division IV races of the Woodbridge and Stanford invitationals the previous two weeks. Trafeh’s time ranks as the second fastest on the course behind the 14:52 set by Ryan Hall of Big Bear in 2000. Christina Jiminez of Apple Valley Granite Hills had the fastest girls’ time of 19:33 to win the Division I race.

Barstow, the defending state Division III champion, won the Division II title with a 33-68 victory over Riverside La Sierra. Barstow had five of the top nine finishers.

Chaffey High was beaten in football, 20-16, by Jurupa Valley on Friday, but its record still improved. The Tigers were awarded a forfeit victory earlier in the day over San Bernardino Pacific, which had defeated Chaffey, 38-0, on Sept. 20.

Pacific used an ineligible player, Southern Section spokesman Thom Simmons said. The player was in his fourth year at Pacific but had spent a year being home-schooled, making him a fifth-year senior. Although the player could have petitioned the section for eligibility, “the school never filed the necessary paperwork,” Simmons said.

Chaffey is now 1-3. Pacific opened San Andreas League play Friday with a 35-0 loss to Colton and is now 1-3.
