GIRLS’ GOLF Torrance has been the best-kept secret this season. The Tartars, led by freshman Angela Park and junior Maria Ham, are averaging 214 for the season and have not shot higher than 224. GIRLS’ TENNIS Palm Desert, 144-18 in sets this season, holds onto the top spot. GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL None of the Southland teams lived up to the name of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions, but there were some noteworthy matches. Torrance Bishop Montgomery finished fifth out of 16 teams, by defeating Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, Newport Harbor and Torrey Pines. Mira Costa finished sixth. BOYS’ WATER POLO La Verne Damien makes its debut after winning the North Orange County tournament. Damien defeated previously 10th-ranked South Pasadena, 16-7, in the semifinals, then ousted Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley with a 5-2 victory. Long Beach Wilson maintained its grip on the top spot with an 8-6 victory at North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, its second victory over the Wolverines in eight days.
