Palm Desert shot 375 in the first round of the Joe Barry Junior Masters tournament in Sacramento and defeated San Marcos by a stroke in what many coaches consider a mini-state tournament. The second round of the tournament was rained out. Kyle Forbes and Aaron Davis each shot one-over-par 73 to lead Palm Desert.

No. 1 Corona del Mar handed Irvine Northwood its first Pacific Coast League loss. Harvard-Westlake overcame a challenge from Beverly Hills to win, 10-8, but the Normans take over the No. 10 spot from Oxnard because of a considerably tougher schedule.

The hurdling talents of Craig Wheat help Compton Dominguez supplant Long Beach Poly as the top-ranked team in the Southland. Poly would outscore Dominguez by a few points in the sprints and relays in a hypothetical meet featuring all of the top performers in the Southern and City sections, but Poly has no match for double Arcadia Invitational champion Wheat in hurdles.

Long Beach Poly retains its top ranking this week, but the difference between it and No. 2 Riverside North is almost indiscernible. There was a definitive gap between Poly and defending state champion North at the beginning of the season, but Husky junior Gayle Hunter has emerged as one of the top long jumpers and triple jumpers in the state.
