McBride Makes the Difference for Crew
Brian McBride scored one goal and set up another as the Columbus Crew spoiled the New England Revolution’s home opener Saturday with a 2-1 victory in front of 15,287 at Foxboro, Mass.
The defending Eastern Division champion Revolution (0-1-1) showed little of the poise that helped it reach the MLS Cup game last season.
In the 12th minute, Eric Denton found McBride with a long pass down the left side. McBride held the ball at the top of the Revolution area where an unmarked Denton got the ball and beat goalkeeper Adin Brown with a low shot along the right post from 19 yards.
McBride, who helped set up a handful of other chances for Columbus (2-0-1), doubled the Crew’s lead at the 53rd minute after a crossing pass by Jeff Cunningham.
Washington 0, Chicago 0 -- Chicago’s Zach Thornton and D.C.’s Nick Rimando combined to stop five shots in front of 17,321 at Washington as the Fire and United played to their third straight scoreless tie.
United (0-1-1) hasn’t scored a goal against the Fire (0-0-2) since March 2002, and the Fire last scored against Washington when it won, 3-0, less than two months later.
San Jose 1, Kansas City 1 -- Former Galaxy forward Brian Mullan scored in the 81st minute to salvage a tie for the host Earthquakes after they scored an own goal for the Wizards in front of 17,032 at San Jose.

San Diego 2, New York 0 -- Shannon MacMillan had a goal and an assist to lead the Spirit (1-1) over the Power (0-3) in front of 5,025 at Uniondale, N.Y.
Boston 3, Carolina 1 -- Maren Meinert curled a corner kick inside the far post in the sixth minute and set up another goal as the Breakers (2-1) defeated the Courage (0-2) in front of 5,110 at Cary, N.C.
