Lakewood Mayfair High discovered how good it can be when it plays with a full complement of starters Saturday during a 62-55 upset of Los Angeles Loyola in the Dream Classic at Pauley Pavilion.

The Monsoons (8-4) used a 15-4 run ending the third quarter and opening the fourth to knock off the Cubs (10-3), No. 4 in The Times’ Southland rankings.

Mayfair guard Brian McFadden scored a game-high 19 points and Dejon Prejean scored 11 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter. Justin Hawkins added 14 points for the Monsoons, who wore down the Cubs with a matchup zone defense.

Davis Cantor scored 18 points -- all on three-pointers -- for the Cubs, whose last lead was 36-35 late in the third quarter. Kansas-bound guard Omar Wilkes had 15 points for Loyola.

Mayfair Coach Dave Breig declined to elaborate on the violation of team rules last week that sidelined six of his players for two games during the Estancia tournament. Breig would only say that nothing illegal happened.
