Santa Margarita is expected to lose its No. 1 national ranking after going 0-1-2 last week, but remains atop these rankings because of its sparkling overall record and victory in the premier bracket of the prestigious Student Sports tournament in Tampa, Fla., last month. In addition, second-ranked Woodbridge’s only loss was a 1-0 decision to No. 8 Riverside Poly. Santa Margarita tied Poly, 2-2, last week. Santa Ana Mater Dei moves up two spots after beating Santa Margarita, 2-1, in a Serra League game.

North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake retains the No. 1 ranking because the Wolverines still haven’t lost, though they did settle for a scoreless tie against Woodland Hills Louisville. On Thursday in the South Coast League, No. 2 Dana Point Dana Hills plays No. 3 Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley. Santa Margarita got off to a 3-0 start in the Serra League with victories over Fullerton Rosary, Lakewood St. Joseph and Santa Ana Mater Dei. Foothill has won 17 consecutive games dating to last season, but that’s not the Knights’ most impressive streak. Foothill has not given up a goal in its last two games, defeating Los Alamitos, 10-0, and Laguna Hills, 19-0. The Knights have given up only 38 goals in 11 games this season. Corona del Mar completed a demanding week, defeating Long Beach Wilson, 12-7, and Santa Margarita, 8-7. Against the Eagles, Corona del Mar scored the go-ahead goal with 43 seconds left when Katya Eadington’s shot from 10 meters hit the crossbar and Daniela DiGiacomo was in position to put it in the goal. The Sea Kings play Laguna Beach on Wednesday in a key Pacific Coast League game, then head north for the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions on Friday and Saturday at UC Santa Barbara. The tournament is one of the most competitive of the season, with the Southland’s top six teams entered and eight of the top 10. Among the possible second-round games Friday is Santa Barbara against Santa Margarita.

The Five Counties Invitational over the weekend helped to sort out the rankings and showed that this season the power of Southern Section wrestling can be found in Orange County. Santa Ana Calvary Chapel, Santa Ana and Orange El Modena all finished in the top 10 at Five Counties and Mission Viejo and Los Alamitos finished 18th and 19th, respectively, meaning five of the top eight Southern Section finishers were from Orange County. Overall, Five Counties must be considered a disappointment for Southland schools. Hugo Guzman of Santa Ana (103 pounds), Sean Prentice of Rosemead (112) and Joe Williams of Calvary Chapel (189) were the only section wrestlers to win individual titles, and only third-place Calvary Chapel was among the top five teams.
