Reed Able to Seal Upset for Inglewood

Inglewood guard Ray Reed made five of six free throws in the final 53 seconds to secure the Sentinels’ 70-64 upset of top-seeded San Bernardino San Gorgonio on Friday in a Southern Section Division II-AA quarterfinal boys’ basketball game at Inglewood.

Reed punctuated his 25-point performance afterward by stomping on a poster bearing San Gorgonio guard Kevin Houston’s name that had been taken from the Spartan cheering section. Houston, matched against Reed, scored 17 of his game-high 32 points in the fourth quarter.

“I’m the best point guard, so I had to let that be known after my team won,” said Reed, a senior who is unsigned but has received a scholarship offer from Oregon State.

Yonas Michael scored 15 points on five three-pointers for Inglewood (21-8). Khorry Lewis had 17 points for San Gorgonio (27-3).

North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake 73, Huntington Beach Ocean View 51 -- Junior forward Bryce Taylor scored 29 points to lead the winners in a ragged, sometimes sloppy contest that had 49 turnovers, several forced shots by both teams and a slew of fouls in a Division III-A semifinal game at Huntington Beach Marina.

Ocean View (27-4) sent the Wolverines (25-6) to the foul line 33 times and Harvard-Westlake converted 27, with Taylor sinking all eight of his attempts in the fourth quarter.

Junior guard Matt Sargeant led the Seahawks with 22 points, but suffered leg cramps for much of the second half as Harvard-Westlake picked up the pace.

Westchester 78, Woodland Hills Taft 52 -- A smothering man-to-man defense combined with overwhelming physical superiority lifted the top-seeded Comets to a City Championship semifinal victory at L.A. Southwest College.

UCLA-bound Trevor Ariza scored 19 points and had nine rebounds and Bobby Brown contributed 16 points for Westchester (27-3), which earned a spot in next Saturday’s City final at the Forum against the winner of today’s game between Fairfax and Carson.

Westchester, which gave Coach Ed Azzam his 500th victory Wednesday as it tries for a fourth consecutive City title, opened a 10-point halftime lead and was never threatened.

The Comets focused on containing Taft’s two top scorers, Jordan Farmar and Steve Smith. Farmar finished with 19 points and Smith had 18. Matt Cook, who scored 27 points in a quarterfinal win over Los Angeles Crenshaw, went scoreless.

In wrestling:

Masters Meet -- Santa Ana Calvary Chapel had seven wrestlers advance to the quarterfinals of the Southern Section championships at Fountain Valley High, but one that didn’t has the Eagles concerned about their chances of winning a state championship.

Bryan Osuna, the 112-pounder for Calvary Chapel, defaulted to Sean Prentice of Rosemead during the third period of their second-round match. Osuna, who placed eighth in the state last year, has a stress fracture in his back and is unlikely to continue.

The top eight finishers in each weight class advance to state.

Santa Ana, which had a meet-best 12 wrestlers qualify for the Masters, had seven advance to the quarterfinals, tying Calvary Chapel for most. Temecula Valley has six in the quarterfinals and North Torrance has five.

Manuel Rivera of Rosemead and Joe Williams of Calvary Chapel, each Masters champions a year ago, easily advanced to the quarterfinals as did defending state heavyweight champion Arturo Basulto of Arroyo Grande.

In boys’ soccer:

Van Nuys Grant 3, L.A. Washington 0 -- The Lancers advanced to the semifinals of the City Section boys’ soccer playoffs for the first time since 1982, but it could all be for naught if forward Johny Amaya is found to have violated rules by playing in a Sunday league soccer game during the season.

Amaya, Grant’s leading scorer with 27 goals, did not play in the Lancers’ 5-1 victory over Lake Balboa Birmingham in the first round of the playoffs last week after Birmingham Coach E.B. Madha said he had evidence that Amaya had played in a Sunday league game at Birmingham on Feb. 9. But Amaya played Wednesday in a 2-1 overtime victory over San Fernando and in Friday’s game after an investigation by Grant administrators turned up no evidence of a violation.

Birmingham has filed evidence with the City rules committee that it claims documents Amaya’s illegal participation.

The City rules committee is expected to examine the evidence at a March 11 meeting.
