Dos Pueblos Wins Girls’ Golf Title

Goleta Dos Pueblos, ranked No. 1 in the Southland by The Times, shot a team total of 406 and easily won the Southern Section girls’ golf Northern Divisional championship Tuesday at Santa Barbara Golf Club.

Victoria Alimonda shot four-over-par 76 and Amber Clifford shot 77 to lead the Chargers, who finished 49 shots ahead of No. 9 Camarillo and Calabasas. It is the second consecutive Northern Divisional title for Dos Pueblos, which will defend its section championship Thursday at Indian Hills Golf Club in Riverside.

Quartz Hill shot 468 to finish fourth to earn the final berth in the section finals.

Shalonda Solomon and Jasmine Lee of Long Beach Poly are expected to sign letters of intent this week with South Carolina and USC, respectively.

Solomon, who finished second to North Hills L.A. Baptist’s Allyson Felix in the girls’ 100- and 200-meter races in the state track and field championships in June, won both of those events in the Pan-American Junior Championships in July.

Lee won the 400 in the state meet and was a member of the United States’ 1600 relay team in the Pan-American Junior Championships.

Liza Pasciuto of Murrieta Valley, the defending Southern Section Division I cross-country champion, has committed to Colorado.

Pasciuto, runner-up in last year’s state Division I final, chose Colorado over UCLA.

Orange Lutheran’s Melissa Yunghans, who finished fourth in the shotput at the state track and field championships last spring with a personal best of 46 feet, will sign a letter of intent today to attend Stanford.

Yunghans won the shotput and discus events at the Southern Section Division IV finals.

She was also named the Empire League’s most valuable player in girls’ basketball as a junior.

Beverly Hills High’s Riza Zalameda will sign a letter of intent to attend UCLA on a tennis scholarship.

She chose the Bruins over Stanford, Washington and Duke.

Zalameda, who plays No. 1 singles for the Normans, is expected to be among the top players in the Southern Section individual tournament.

Zalameda and former Corona del Mar standout Anne Yelsey won the girls’ 18 doubles titles at the USTA Super National Hardcourt Championships last summer and the Easter Bowl/Super National Spring Championships in April.

Dave Demarest of Westminster La Quinta and Chatsworth’s Tom Meusborn were named District 8 coaches of the year for 2003 by the National High School Baseball Coaches Assn.

Demarest guided the Aztecs to the Southern Section Division IV title and Meusborn led the Chancellors to the City Section championship. The same organization named Westminster La Quinta’s Jim Doyle as assistant coach of the year and Ray Daniels, groundskeeper at Irvine Windrow Park, as groundskeeper of the year, both in District 8, which includes California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii.

The national coach, assistant coach and groundskeeper of the year will be announced in December.
