From Staff Reports

Tulyah Gaines, a 5-foot-8 point guard who has committed to Notre Dame, won’t be returning to Burbank Burroughs for her senior season.

Gaines, who made The Times’ All-San Fernando Valley team last season after averaging 18.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 4.1 steals, has enrolled at Cheyenne High in North Las Vegas.

Gaines’ mother, Pha, moved the family to Nevada for employment reasons and because she had family there. Tulyah’s brother, Jashaad, a sophomore who played football at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, also will attend Cheyenne, which is known for its football program but does not have a highly regarded girls’ basketball program.

Senior Carol Rodriguez, who finished third in the girls’ 100 meters and sixth in the 200 in the state track and field championships in June for Anaheim Western, has transferred to Long Beach Wilson.

The two-time defending Southern Section Division III champion in the 100 and 200 moved to Long Beach with her family this summer.

Longtime Western track Coach Randy Polk was fired from that position at the end of last season but would not comment on the reasons for his dismissal or whether it contributed to Rodriguez’s transfer.
