Santa Ana Mater Dei, which defeated Los Angeles Marymount in a nonleague match, clings to the top spot after a disappointing sixth-place finish at the Las Vegas Durango Fall Classic. Marymount defeated Los Alamitos in a nonleague match and beat Long Beach Wilson for the Durango title. Manhattan Beach Mira Costa (ninth at Durango), Los Alamitos (fifth at Durango) and Newport Harbor (quarterfinalist at Dave Mohs Orange County tournament) each posted subpar performances. Anaheim Esperanza climbs five spots after making it to the Division I final at Mohs. Brea Olinda reached the Division II final at same tournament.

Hesperia Sultana, the No. 3-ranked team in the nation by Harrier magazine, defeated No. 8 Snohomish (Wash.), 48-52, to win the Iolani Invitational in Hawaii on Saturday. But Murrieta Valley might be running as well as any team in the state at the moment. The Nighthawks set a team-time course record while winning the sweepstakes race of the Woodbridge Invitational on Saturday night after dominating the Bronco Invitational at Prado Regional Park in Chino on Sept. 13. Anaheim Esperanza heads the list of new additions to the rankings after finishing second to Murrieta Valley at Woodbridge.

Santa Ana Foothill defeated Lake Forest El Toro, 9-6, last week to take over the top ranking, but many seem to agree that the Southern Section Division I race remains wide open.
