Dozens of Homes Are Evacuated in Wildfire
A wildfire erupted Sunday afternoon near the high desert community of Anza, near Hemet, prompting authorities to temporarily evacuate approximately 200 people from about 50 homes.
By evening, the Trinity fire had burned more than 350 acres and destroyed three outbuildings, though no homes were damaged, said U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Melody Lardner.
The fire, which authorities said may have started on the nearly 900-acre campus of the Trinity Children and Family Services facility for troubled youth, spread quickly through dense chaparral as temperatures hit 112 degrees. The blaze was 75% contained by evening, with more than 300 firefighters, aided by nine aircraft, working to stop the advance of the fire into the rural, spread-out community, Lardner said.
Meanwhile, firefighters battling another blaze, in the Angeles National Forest near Castaic, managed to fully contain the fire Sunday night. Nearly 700 firefighters fought the blaze after it began Saturday.
