Re “State Report Criticizes Hearst Ranch Deal,” Aug. 6: This line from your article says it all, “The Hearst Corp. has insisted that state officials have a minimal oversight role.” In fact, unless the state takes steps to improve this deal, the Hearst Corp. will develop the conservation management plan with no state involvement or oversight, and without any public comment. Equally amazing, this management plan, supposed to “protect” the open spaces of the Hearst Ranch, for which taxpayers are to pay $95 million, will not even be developed until a year after we write the Hearst Corp. a check.

What are we paying for?
