5.2 Offshore Quake Jolts San Diego and Tijuana
A moderate earthquake centered offshore about 45 miles west of Tijuana rattled that city and San Diego on Tuesday afternoon, but there were no reports of major damage or injury.
Seismologists at Caltech said the 5.2-magnitude temblor occurred at 3:29 p.m. They said it had not been determined whether the quake was on a known fault.
The quake was felt as far away as Los Angeles and the Palm Springs area.
Windows shuddered in high-rise office buildings in San Diego and a few ceiling tiles fell at a fire station in the border community of San Ysidro.
The quake interrupted a meeting of the San Diego City Council, which resumed after a few jokes about a “shake-up” at City Hall.
At SeaWorld in San Diego, officials stopped the Journey to Atlantis water thrill ride and unloaded passengers to check for damage.
None was found and the ride was reopened.
“It was a purely precautionary evacuation,” said park spokesman Dave Koontz.
Two Amtrak trains were delayed about an hour while officials inspected rails on the San Diego-to-Los Angeles line. They found no damage.
