Pick Six Gets Attention

Share

The post position draw for the Santa Anita Derby will be held this morning, but horse players will be more interested in the $190,587 pick-six carry-over awaiting in the afternoon.

The pick six includes three turf events -- a mile race for maiden fillies and mares, a 6 1/2-furlong dash down the hill for $50,000 claimers, and a 1 1/8-mile allowance for older fillies and mares.

In the day’s longest grass race, Juliette will make her U.S. debut for owner Mark MacDonald and trainer Bobby Frankel after winning two of eight in England and Ireland.

Bred in Ireland, the 4-year-old Sadler’s Wells filly will race on Lasix for the first time and will be ridden by Alex Solis, who begins the last three weeks of the meet tied with Victor Espinoza atop the jockey standings.

Juliette’s six opponents are Stage Shy, a full sister to the multiple-stakes winner Geri and an impressive winner in her first start in this country on Jan. 29, Kirtle, Ran For The Dough, Tifonica, Esmay and Mer De Corail, who has been second in six of her 15 starts.

The three other pick-six races are a $61,000 allowance for fillies and mares at six furlongs and a pair of maiden claimers.

Race of the day: Our Tune, who has won three of her last five starts, is among seven fillies and mares scheduled to run today in the $60,000 Numbered Account at Aqueduct. The 1 1/8-mile race also attracted Stake, U K Trick, Board Eligible, Biogio’s Beauty, Serenity’s Smile and Hot Golden Jet.

One for the road: Phone Ruler looks like the controlling speed in the seventh at Aqueduct, and he gets a confident two-level boost in class after being claimed for $16,000 by owner-trainer Scott Lake. Apprentice jockey Edwin Perez will ride the 6-year-old son of Phone Trick in the $25,000 claimer at seven furlongs.

Exotically speaking: A pick four using Chester’s Chance, Memory Man, We All Love Aleyna and Sacred Summit in the fifth, Jen’s Spell in the sixth, Juliette and Stage Shy in the seventh, and Lessur, Dashing Cat and Swiss Tamerlane in the eighth.
