From Times Staff Reports

Luis Hernandez of visiting Chino out-dueled fellow left-hander Paul Applebee of La Verne Damien on Tuesday, lifting the Cowboys, who are ranked No. 15 in the Southland by The Times, to a 2-0 victory in a matchup of first-place teams in the Sierra League.

Hernandez, a senior, gave up four hits, struck out five and didn’t walk a batter to improve to 6-2.

“When they did hit the ball, they didn’t hit it hard,” Chino Coach Bob Sheehan said. “It was a very good win for us.”
