New trail head for ORVers

ANGELES National Forest officials inaugurated the Indian Canyon Trail head last week in Soledad Canyon, near Agua Dulce, to accommodate off-road vehicle users and horse riders.

The trail head serves as a jumping-off point for the Indian Canyon off-highway vehicle route and for the 2,655-mile Pacific Crest Trail.

Off-highway vehicle users are not allowed on the PCT. Equestrians, who have long used the gravel Indian Canyon Road to explore San Gabriel Mountain foothills, now have a base camp because the new facility includes a picnic table and restrooms and can accommodate horse trailers.

“It’s part of managed recreation,” says Angeles Forest spokeswoman Sherry Rollman. “Give people more sites and starting points and you can keep them on the trails.”

The project was spearheaded by the California Trail Users Coalition, which promotes off-highway access. The U.S. Forest Service will identify more sites for similar access development next month.
