Thieves Strike Baseball Teams

From Times Staff Reports

Eight pitching machines have been stolen from four Westside high schools in the last two months, raising concerns that a theft ring is in operation.

Beverly Hills was the first school struck the weekend of Dec. 18-19, when thieves cut a hole into a fence and stole two pitching machines from a batting cage.

Culver City had two pitching machines taken Jan. 25 from a locked storage container. On the weekend of Feb. 5-6, Los Angeles University had a pitching machine stolen from its softball storage container. On the same weekend, Venice had three pitching machines stolen from its baseball storage container.

“They know exactly where to go,” Venice baseball Coach Tim Alcantar said.

Police reports were filed in each instance, but it was Culver City baseball Coach Rick Prieto who discovered a possible pattern after learning of the other break-ins on the Westside.

“It’s a small ring thinking they can do something with used machines,” Prieto said.

Police agencies are investigating.
