From Times Staff Reports

Ashley Veilleux and Taylor Schlopy proved to be quite a tandem for Westlake Village Oaks Christian, which came through with upset victories over two of the top teams in the Southland in the Thousand Oaks softball tournament Saturday at the Thousand Oaks Community Center.

Veilleux (11-2) started both games and contributed offensively for the Lions, who won, 7-1, over Goleta Dos Pueblos (17-4), ranked No. 18 in the Southland by The Times, in the first round and followed with a 3-0 victory over No. 6 Santa Ana Mater Dei (16-5) in the quarterfinals.

The unranked Lions will play No. 11 Simi Valley Royal in one semifinal next Saturday. The Highlanders beat No. 10 Orange El Modena, 7-4, in the quarterfinals in a game halted after four innings because of a time limit.

Veilleux pitched three innings and hit a two-run home run against Dos Pueblos and threw four innings against Mater Dei. Schlopy pitched two innings of scoreless relief and had a triple, single and three runs scored against the Chargers. Courtney Lee added a home run for the Lions (19-4).

Against Mater Dei, Schlopy scored what turned out to be the only run the Lions would need when she reached on an infield single and was tripled in by Veilleux in the first inning.

Seventh-ranked Camarillo (16-5) lost twice, falling 6-4 to El Modena and 8-4 to unranked Newhall Hart. In two eight-inning first-round games, No. 8 Fullerton Rosary fell to unranked Westlake Village Westlake, 3-2, and No. 12 Thousand Oaks was upended by No. 25 Riverside Poly, 5-2.

Lindsey Ubrun hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning and Sammi Parks (9-0) pitched a six-hitter for Poly (16-3-1) in its victory over Thousand Oaks (12-6).

The Bears will play unranked Long Beach Millikan (18-4) in the semifinals, which are scheduled for 3:45 p.m. with the championship game set for 7 p.m.

Millikan won its quarterfinal over Westlake, 3-2, as Akemi Fleming had a run-scoring single in the second inning and then Fleming and Jodi Nakawatase scored on passed balls in the fourth inning.
