From Times Staff Reports

Scott Clayton of San Bernardino Arroyo Valley established a course record at Cimarron Golf Resort on Monday when he shot a 10-under-par 61 to win the Southern Section Central Regional tournament.

Clayton’s round is the lowest shot in the playoffs in state history. He led qualifiers from three regionals; the top 24 at each site qualified for the section championships next Monday at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs.

James Dalthorpe of Westlake Village Oaks Christian, Levi Garcia of Paso Robles and Kyle Mendoza of Covina, who all shot three-under 69 at River Ridge Golf Course in Oxnard, shared the Northern Regional title. Rory Hie of Cerritos took the Southern title with a five-under 67 at SeaCliff Country Club in Huntington Beach.

The final round is Wednesday at Griffith Park’s Wilson Golf Course.

Swimming

The La Canada boys’ swim team, which appeared to have won its first title at the Southern Section Division II finals Saturday at Belmont Plaza, has been lowered to second after it was discovered that junior Andrew Nguyen competed in five events during the two-day meet, one more event than is allowed.

San Luis Obispo will be the Division II boys’ champion.

Nguyen won the 200-yard freestyle race, was third in the 500 freestyle and anchored the 200- and 400-freestyle relays in the finals. He swam in the 200 medley relay Thursday in preliminaries.
