This week’s top games

Highlights of this week’s high school football schedule:

SOUTHERN SECTION

* Los Alamitos (7-0, 2-0) vs. Huntington Beach Edison (6-1, 2-0) at Orange Coast College, 7 p.m., Friday: Los Alamitos will get its first crack at a team currently ranked in The Times’ top 25. Second-ranked Edison has won six in a row since losing its opener in Hawaii. The Chargers had given up 20 points or more in five of their first six games, but they shut down Huntington Beach, 28-0, last week. Los Alamitos has won three in a row against the Chargers since their 14-14 tie in 2001.

* Newhall Hart (6-1, 2-0) at Valencia (6-1, 2-0), 7 p.m., Friday: Sixth-ranked Valencia enters as the favorite behind quarterback Michael Herrick and running back Shane Vereen. The Vikings’ potent offense hasn’t been held to fewer than 28 points. Herrick has passed for 2,024 yards and 10 touchdowns, and has also rushed for seven touchdowns, and Vereen has rushed for 1,005 yards and 18 touchdowns. Hart, ranked No. 12, had won 13 consecutive Foothill League titles and 65 consecutive league games before Herrick led Valencia to last year’s 29-10 victory.

* Santa Ana Mater Dei (4-3, 2-0) at Bellflower St. John Bosco (3-4, 1-1), 7:30 p.m., Friday: Each team is led by a young running back coming off the best game of his high school career. Mater Dei, ranked No. 10, will count on junior Ahmed Mokhtar, who rushed for a career-high 164 yards in 27 carries and the final touchdown in a 17-7 victory over Santa Margarita on Friday. St. John Bosco’s Lawrence Doss, a sophomore, totaled 181 yards in 25 carries and scored a touchdown in a 33-31 loss to Anaheim Servite.

* Santa Margarita (3-4, 0-2) at La Puente Bishop Amat (5-2, 1-1), 7:30 p.m., Friday: Two of the Serra League’s four ranked teams face off, and there’s a sense of urgency for No. 22 Santa Margarita. The Eagles have lost three in a row and four of the last five by a combined 21 points. The league’s best scoring defense belongs to No. 20 Bishop Amat, which has 23 sacks, 10 by James Neely.

CITY SECTION

* Canoga Park (6-1, 2-0) at Tujunga Verdugo Hills (4-2, 2-0), 7 p.m., Friday: The Argott cousins, quarterback Vincent and running back Andrew, have led Canoga Park to six consecutive victories entering this Sunset Six League title decider. Vincent has passed for 1,345 yards and 15 touchdowns, and Andrew has rushed for 519 yards and four touchdowns.
