A 10-year-old boy was shot to death and a man was wounded early Saturday when they stopped for a red light at a Moreno Valley intersection and at least one occupant in another car opened fire, authorities said.

Police were called to Moreno Valley Community Hospital shortly after midnight. The boy, who had been shot in the head, was transferred to Riverside County Regional Medical Center and died there, said Investigator Matt Diaz of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The boy’s name has not been released because his relatives hadn’t been notified. Diaz did not know the victims’ relationship.

“It’s sad any time, but it especially hits home at this time of year,” he said.

The 22-year-old man was treated for a wound to the cheek and released.

Diaz said the man told investigators that three other cars stopped at the traffic light at Iris Avenue and Kitching Street. The shot or shots came from at least one, possibly a dark green Chevrolet Camaro.

Diaz said the victims did not appear to do anything to incite the shooting.

“An unprovoked attack like that is not a common thing,” he said.

Police ask that anyone with information about the shooting call investigators Brett Seckinger at (951) 955-2777 or Jon Wade at (951) 486-6700.
