A Corona man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of killing his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter, police said.

Carlos Romero Mota, 33, carried the girl to a Corona fire station in the 700 block of South Smith Avenue about noon Friday, officials said. Mota told firefighters he thought the girl, Diana Becceril, had been choking, said Sgt. Neil Reynolds, a spokesman for the Corona Police Department.

As paramedics rushed her to a hospital, they noticed there were bruises all over her body and told authorities, Reynolds said.

The girl remained hospitalized over the weekend and died about 1 a.m. Tuesday at Loma Linda University Medical Center, coroner’s officials said. They have not announced the cause of death. The investigation is continuing, Reynolds said.

On Friday, Corona police went to the apartment where Mota lived with his girlfriend and her children, ages 3 months to 8 years. Mota was arrested on suspicion of child abuse, and although none of the other children bore signs of physical abuse, they were taken into protective custody, Reynolds said.
