Narbonne shows its mettle just in time

After being held scoreless for nearly 47 minutes, Harbor City Narbonne High’s offense was plenty productive down the stretch of a 27-24, triple-overtime victory over visiting San Pedro on Friday night.

Gauchos running back Melvin Davis scored the tying touchdown on a fourth-and-goal run with 1 minute 8 seconds left in regulation and Narbonne (6-1 overall, 2-0 Marine League) matched San Pedro (6-1, 1-1) point for point before Thomas Gray scored the winning touchdown on a 10-yard pass from Josh Moten.

Narbonne’s third consecutive victory in the rivalry establishes it as the likely top-seeded team in the City Section playoffs should the Gauchos win their final three regular-season games.

“It sure does give our kids and our program some momentum and a feeling that we can play with these guys or anyone else,” Narbonne Coach Manuel Douglas said Saturday.

Dueling QBs

Well, there’s always the next four years.

Barring a meeting in the Southern Section playoffs, Upland quarterback Josh Nunes will have to take his pursuit of a victory over Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos counterpart Richard Brehaut to the Pacific 10 Conference after the host Grizzlies pulled out a 41-28 Baseline League victory.

Brehaut, who has committed to UCLA, passed for two second-half touchdowns and ran for another to lead Los Osos (6-1, 2-0) back from a 21-20 deficit over the Stanford-bound Nunes and the Highlanders (6-1, 1-1).

Nunes, who completed 13 of 35 passes for 184 yards, might hope that Los Osos running back Arby Fields doesn’t also wind up playing for a Pac-10 competitor. Fields scored four touchdowns -- on a 62-yard punt return, a 36-yard reception and rushes of 27 yards and one yard.

Fields finished with 172 yards in 23 carries and Brehaut, who has won all three varsity meetings with Nunes, completed 13 of 23 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns.

Upset special

With his team trailing, 10-0, against unbeaten Santa Monica, Beverly Hills defensive end Greg Townsend forced and recovered a fumble, sparking the Normans (5-2, 2-0) to their first touchdown and an eventual 26-10 Ocean League victory over the Vikings (6-1, 1-1) at Santa Monica College.

Townsend is the son of the former Oakland Raiders lineman of the same name.

Trojans watch

Woodland Hills Taft tailback D.J. Morgan had 140 yards and four touchdowns in only seven carries to lead the host Toreadors (6-1, 2-0) to a 48-6 West Valley League victory over Granada Hills (1-6, 0-2).

Bruins watch

Arcadia’s Todd Golper had six catches for 60 yards and made 19 tackles for the host Apaches (4-3, 3-1) during a 54-0 Pacific League loss to Pasadena Muir (6-1, 4-0).
