Thomas powers Cougars
Los Angeles Crenshaw has been on a hot streak this decade in supplying talented football players to the Pacific 10 Conference, and the Cougars showed off another standout Thursday in sophomore speedster DeAnthony Thomas.
Thomas is a big-play weapon waiting to be unleashed, and neighborhood rival Dorsey had no answer for him.
He returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown, returned an interception 32 yards for a touchdown and had another interception return wiped out by a penalty in Crenshaw’s 34-0 victory in a Coliseum League game at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Crenshaw (5-2, 2-0) is a young team hoping to improve in the final weeks of the regular season to make a playoff run.
Thomas is an electrifying talent, but Crenshaw has had plenty in recent years, including current UCLA players Brian Price and Reggie Carter.
“Speed is a phenomenal thing in football,” Crenshaw Coach Robert Garrett said. “He’s pretty fast. He has a lot to learn, though.”
Crenshaw also received a strong game from two-way starter Hayes Pullard, a junior linebacker-fullback. Pullard rushed for 71 yards, scored a touchdown and supplied a couple of hard hits on defense.
Backup fullback Geoffrey Norwood contributed two touchdowns on short runs. Dorsey dropped to 6-2 and 1-1.
