Share

No. 1 Chatsworth (17-1, 4-0) vs.

No. 20 Reseda Cleveland (13-3, 4-0)

Today at 3 p.m.

BASEBALL PREVIEW

Why it matters: These might be the two best teams in the City Section, but the problem for Cleveland is that it hasn’t beaten Chatsworth since 2002. Chatsworth has the most productive pitcher in the City in senior left-hander Mike Renner, who’s 5-0 with a 1.32 earned-run average. Cleveland will counter with John Wilson (5-0). Cleveland’s top two hitters have been Spencer Horowitz (.545 average) and Niko Garcia (.491). Chatsworth’s Andy Weissberg is batting .478 with 28 RBIs. The Cavaliers broke down defensively during a tournament in Las Vegas, something that can’t happen against a Chatsworth team known for playing exceptional defense. This is the first of two games this week between the West Valley League powers.

MONDAY’S RESULT

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 8, Carmichael Jesuit 6

Top contributors: Kelly Dugan of Notre Dame hit two home runs and Casey Ryan and Eric Walbridge had one apiece. Josh Goossen Brown threw 6 1/3 innings to pick up the victory.

The scoop: Notre Dame won its opening game of the Anderson Bat National Classic with the Pepperdine-bound Dugan supplying the power. In other opening games, Derek Campbell’s home run in the seventh lifted Santa Ana Mater Dei over Aptos, 4-3. Scottsdale (Ariz.) Notre Dame Prep improved to 17-0 with a 9-8 victory over Norco despite a two-run home run from Matt Hobgood, his eighth.
