Clippers add Randy Foye, Ryan Gomes

Free-agent floodgates opened even more Thursday and NBA executives started making deals, including two by the Clippers.

In one dizzying stretch, the Clippers reached agreements with forward Ryan Gomes and guard Randy Foye, helping fill two big needs in a couple of hours.

On top of that, they released a positive, forward-looking statement that all the other LeBron James finalists were putting out not long after James selected Miami.

(That is, other than fire-breathing Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert)

Foye’s contract is for two years, and said to be in excess of $8 million. Bob Myers, the agent for Gomes, told The Times his deal is for three years and $12 million, saying: “There was interest from multiple teams. We felt this was a great fit for Ryan.”

Said Clippers General Manager Neil Olshey: “I think Ryan Gomes is an excellent addition to our team. Ryan is a proven, hardnosed veteran presence who is a consistent inside-out scorer with great character who has had a positive impact on every team he has been a part of.”

There had been talk earlier in the day that Gomes was headed to Toronto, and speculation the Clippers had made an offer to free agent Mike Miller. Neither was correct, and it appears as though Miller, who met with the Clippers on Saturday, could be headed to the Knicks.

Gomes, 6 feet 7, averaged 10.9 points and 4.6 rebounds in 76 games last season for the Timberwolves, and was traded to the Trail Blazers in a draft-day deal. Portland then waived him for in a cost-cutting move late last month.

He was working out with his former Timberwolves teammates at Target Center in Minneapolis earlier in the day and was said to look somewhat leaner than during the regular season.

There was a strong thread of Minnesota running through the day. Gomes was a teammate of Foye in Minnesota and Foye and Miller were traded to the Wizards last summer.

Said Olshey: “Randy is a player who has improved throughout his time in the league, and is someone who will provide on-the-ball defense, athleticism, intensity and an impressive ability to score to the group we already have in place.”
