Green Bay crowd might be merciless as Brett Favre returns with Vikings

The scene had a much different feel a year ago when Brett Favre rolled back into Green Bay and threw four touchdown passes to lead Minnesota to victory at Lambeau Field.

Now, the quarterback is dealing with problems off the field — he met with NFL security Tuesday over the alleged texting of X-rated photos of himself — and inconsistency on it. At 41, he’s looking closer to his age, and the Vikings (2-3) are looking to claw their way back to .500.

Since that road victory, the Vikings are 0-6 away from home, with two of those losses in overtime, including the NFC championship game at New Orleans.

“A team mentality is you’ve got to love the road,” Minnesota Coach Brad Childress said this week. “You’ve got to love going on the road and banding up all together. The only people that are with you are the people that are traveling with you and getting out on that field. It’s a great feeling to go somewhere and make people sit on their hands.”

It will be tough to quiet that Lambeau crowd, especially with Favre coming back (again) in purple.

Other games to watch:

New England at San Diego: This was rounding into one of the NFL’s better rivalries over the last five years (even though it was lopsided in favor of the Patriots) but has lost some steam with San Diego’s struggles. The Chargers (2-4) are in desperate need of a victory after consecutive losses to the Raiders and Rams. That’s a tall order against the Patriots (4-1), particularly because the Chargers lack the healthy receivers to best test New England’s suspect secondary.

Pittsburgh at Miami: Ben Roethlisberger always has played well against the Dolphins, going 3-0 against them with a combined passer rating of 99.0. But Miami isn’t going to roll over, especially at home, where Chad Henne has thrown for 300-plus yards in four of his last five games.

San Francisco at Carolina: These teams are a combined 1-10, so this game isn’t likely to be an NFC championship preview. But it could be the first victory for the Panthers (0-5), who switched back to Matt Moore as their starting quarterback. Question is, which coach will keep his job longer, Carolina’s John Fox or San Francisco’s Mike Singletary?
